With so much to explore in the Azores, it’s important to enjoy these islands in a way that protects their unique environment for future generations. Following the Leave No Trace principles is a simple but powerful way to help preserve the Azores while having an amazing experience.

What is Leave No Trace?

Leave No Trace is a set of guidelines that encourage responsible outdoor behaviour. The idea is to enjoy nature without leaving any negative impact behind. It’s about respecting the land, wildlife, and local communities.

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

Before you head out, know the trails and conditions. Stick to marked paths to avoid damaging fragile plants and habitats. Bring everything you need so you don’t have to take shortcuts or leave trash behind.

2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

Walk on rocks, dirt paths, or established trails rather than fragile vegetation. If camping, use existing sites when possible. The Azores’ volcanic soil and native plants can be sensitive, so tread lightly.

3. Dispose of Waste Properly

Pack out everything you bring in, including food scraps and litter. The islands don’t have many trash bins in natural areas, so carry a small bag for rubbish. Avoid leaving biodegradable waste as it can disrupt local ecosystems.

4. Leave What You Find

Take only photos and memories. Don’t pick flowers, remove rocks, or disturb archaeological sites. Preserving the natural state keeps the Azores special for everyone.

5. Minimize Campfire Impact

If you do make a fire (where allowed), keep it small and use established fire rings. Better yet, use a camp stove for cooking. The Azores have dry periods when fires can be risky.

6. Respect Wildlife

Observe animals from a distance. Don’t feed or approach them. This helps keep wildlife wild and healthy.

7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Enjoy the peace and quiet of the islands by keeping noise down. Share trails and be friendly, helping everyone connect with nature.

By following these simple steps, we can all play a part in protecting the Azores’ stunning nature. Let’s enjoy the beauty of these islands responsibly, so they remain a paradise for generations to come.
